Everyman Theatre Director of Marketing Composes New Musical

A SUPERHERO staged for the first time at McDonogh School

Everyman Theatre's Director of Marketing, Jonathan K. Waller, is the composer and lyricist behind the new musical A SUPERHERO, which will be staged for the first time at his alma mater, McDonogh School, from April 12th through 14th. The show is a full-scale production featuring more than 30 students from all three divisions at McDonogh. It will also feature a 20-piece orchestra - 11 from the school's music department and 9 professional musicians. The new musical is about the extraordinary power of love, family, and the faith we have in things we can't prove to be real.

Waller graduated from McDonogh School in 2000. It was there that he first became interested in music composition and wrote his very first musical as a senior - "Tale." Waller went on to pursue a Bachelor's of Music in Musical Theatre Composition at New York University. He was awarded the Alan Menken Composition Award while studying at NYU and graduated with honors. Another one of his musicals, "The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley," enjoyed a 60+ city tour throughout the country.

Waller joined the Everyman team as Director of Marketing in Spring 2012. Since then, he has helped lead the company through its transition into its brand new, $18 million home in the newly established Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District this past winter. Before working with Everyman, Waller was the Director of External Affairs at the Vineyard Theatre in New York. Waller is also currently the Producing Artistic Director of the Young Actors Theatre, a popular summer camp for students interested in musical theatre.

A SUPERHERO tells the story of Brown Bradley, a man who believes he can save his struggling hometown by building a brand new amusement park called Superland. However, on its grand opening, he receives shattering opposition from an underestimated local man named William Duncan and Brown's world is turned upside down. He is forced to confront a pivotal event in his life - the day his father died, when Brown was mysteriously saved from falling to his own death by a shadowy figure that could fly. The new musical drama questions, what makes a superhero real?

Involved with the rehearsal process from the start, Waller has worked closely with director Jon Aaron, McDonogh School Eighth Grade English Teacher, as well as choreographer Jamie Eacker, and music director Scott Farquhar.

A SUPERHERO, with book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan K. Waller and original story by Marty Johnson and Jonathan K. Waller, will take place in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre in the Burck Center for Performing Arts at McDonogh School (8600 McDonogh Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117) on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and may be purchased by contacting Sue Tanury at stanury@mcdonogh.org or 410-998-3534. Tickets will also be available at the door for $10. For more information on A SUPERHERO, visit www.superheromusical.com.
