Breast Cancer Survivor's 10 Year Old Daughter Inspires a Pajama Glam Event in New York City To Educate and Empower Families

Tigerlily Foundation Founders Maimah and Noelle Karmo and Shea MoistureTo Host 2ndAnnual Glam Event on May 3 at Brooklyn Marriott

When 10-year-old Noelle found out that her mother had breast cancer, she became her mother's biggest cheerleader. Both mother and daughter weathered the storm together, and happily, they are both in recovery. But each one vowed that they would use the life-changing experience as a moment to create something special and hopefully make a positive impact in the lives of others living with breast cancer.

Mother and breast cancer survivor Maimah Karmo was inspired to begin the Tigerlily Foundation, an organization that has become a nationally renowned cancer support and advocacy resource for women and families. As for Noelle, she wanted to do something fun yet educational for young girls. She dreamed of a huge, glamorous pajama party where girls could have fun and become empowered. An event was born: the Pajama Glam Party in D.C., which attracted more than 300 guests. Because of its success, the party has made its way to New York City!

Noelle and Maimah Karmo will host the Tigerlily Foundation's second annual Pajama Glam Party, presented by SheaMoisture on Saturday, May 3rd at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, located at 333 Adams St. in downtown Brooklyn. The event will be sponsored by Shea Moisture and will bring mothers and daughters together to educate them about health and wellness while creating a memorable bonding experience, and raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Tigerlily Foundation is partnering with award-winning natural skin and hair care brand Shea Moisture to bring glam and empowerment into the lives of New York City women and girls.

Emceed by Ms. New York, Amanda Mason, the event is expected to attract more than 300 attendees. Shea Moisture brand ambassadors, celebrity stylist and author, Diane Bailey, and yoga guru and wellness expert Brenda Blanco - will provide demonstrations for young women on natural hair care and how to make yoga and wellness part of their lifestyle. Also, award-winning producer and writer, Imani Dawson, of TribeCalledCurl.com, and Jenell Stewart of the popular site hair and beauty site KinkyCurlyCoilyMe.com will also provide women with stylish hair tips!

The event will feature local celebrities and beauty pageant queens, as well as health and wellness vendors. Pajama attire is welcome. Guests may partake in hair and makeup stations, pillow fights, sweet treats, jewelry vendors, a nail bar, Zumba, dancing, healthy treats and swag bags. The event will also provide mothers and their girls the opportunity to create inspirational, scrapbook-worthy collages together. The event will be jam-packed with activities such as raffle prizes, beverages, food and pictures on the pink carpet.

Dress in your favorite red, pink or purple pajamas and come out for the time of your life-all for a great cause. Bling and sparkle are highly encouraged!

Pajama Glam is the brainchild of Noelle Karmo, a 10 year-old daughter of a breast cancer survivor, whose mother founded the Tigerlily Foundation during her treatment. "Our mission focuses not only on providing young women in treatment for breast cancer with support services, but to also educate girls and young women to be their own best advocates. Integrating natural products, having a healthy lifestyle and employing prevention as part of their daily lives can make an impact with their breast health risk and improve overall health. Partnering with Shea Moisture, a brand committed to total body wellness and community service, aligns with our belief of using skin and hair care that are free of toxins and synthetic ingredients," says Maimah Karmo, founder of Tigerlily Foundation. She is a seven-year breast cancer survivor.

Maimah Karmo's Biography
Maimah Karmo is the Founder of Tigerlily Foundation and a three year survivor of breast cancer, who most recently received the Congressional Black Caucus Leadership in Advocacy Award for her work with young women and breast cancer. In October 2011, Maimah was appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women, a committee established by the Affordable Care Act, on which she will work to develop initiatives to increase knowledge of breast health and breast cancer, particularly among women under the age of 40 and those at heightened risk for developing the disease.

On February 28, 2006, at 4:45 p.m., she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She had no family history of breast cancer; and was only 32-years old. While undergoing chemotherapy, she made a promise to God that if she survived, she would create an organization that would educate, empower, advocate for and support young women affected by breast cancer. After her second round of treatment, Tigerlily Foundation was born.

Since starting Tigerlily, Maimah has dedicated her life to helping young women around the world. She is a speaker and has appeared in various media outlets, to include O, the Oprah Magazine, Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Redbook Women and Cancer, Cure Magazine and more. She has also been featured on Fox 5, ABC 7, CBS, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America and numerous national radio stations. In 2009, Maimah was awarded a L'Oreal Paris' Woman of Worth award, among others. Most dear to her heart is being the mother of a beautiful 7-year old girl, whom she adores.

While breast cancer was an unwelcome experience, Maimah would not give back the experience. "I've lived more in the past four years than I did the years before, and when I die, I want to know that I made the best use of my "after life" and impacted the lives of as many people as possible." Maimah is dedicated to changing the breast cancer landscape and creating a legacy of a world free of breast cancer.

Tigerlily Foundation focuses on women between the ages of 15 and 40. Approximately 13,000 young women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, and 1,100 die of the disease. Even though they get breast cancer less often than older women, younger women tend to have more aggressive breast cancers, so education about the risk factors and early detection is key. Tigerlily Foundation exists to decrease this disparity, and with the motto of "Beauty, Strength and Transformation", aims to change lives. Visit www.tigerlilyfoundation.org to learn more.

About SheaMoisture: Since 1912, SheaMoisture has been committed to making the highest quality natural skin and hair care products, which are healthy, therapeutic and results-oriented. The brand utilizes family recipes handed down from founder and CEO Richelieu Dennis' great grandmother, Sofi Tucker, who as a young mother, sold her shea butter creations to support her family in Sierra Leone. Products are not tested on animals and do not contain parabens, sulfates, phthalates, paraffin, formaldehyde, mineral oil, artificial color or synthetic fragrance. SheaMoisture ethically sources its shea butter from seven women's coops in Northern Ghana, and works directly with the women to pay above market prices for their shea butter.
