National Players Preview their tour 70 Repertory with Pay-what-you-can Performances

"Nearly Free" Summer Shakespeare Twelfth Night along with performances of The Crucible and Around the World in 80 Days

National Players, America’s longest-running touring company and the hallmark outreach program of the Olney Theatre Center, present its three play repertory with a series of pay-what-you can previews in August and September. Audiences are invited to these low-cost performances of Twelfth Night (August 16 & 17), The Crucible (August 20 & 21) and Around the World in 80 Days (September 18 & 19) in Olney’s Historic Theatre.

"We heard from many people in the community that they missed our free, outdoor summer Shakespeare performances" said Jason King Jones, National Players Artistic Director and Senior Associate Artistic Director at Olney Theatre Center. "So we wanted to lower as much as possible the barriers to these pre-tour preview performances in the Historic Theatre. Community building is a big part of National Players mission, and it felt right to make not just the Shakespeare, but all our previews pay-what-you-can."

The National Players company consists of 10 early-career artists who spend 10 months touring the United States with their three-play repertory to performing arts centers and universities but also schools, rural community centers, penitentiaries and other arts deprived areas. The company for Tour 70 includes: Josh Bierman, Jamie Boller, Benjamin DeCamp Cole, David Reece Hutchison, Alice Kabia, Alanna McNaughton, Hugh Raup, Cedrick Riggs, Jr.,, Diedre Staples, and Zoe Wohlfeld.

Tickets for the previews may only be purchased on the day-of performance at the Olney Theatre Center Box Office. The Box Office opens for Pay-What-You-Can sales at 5pm. All purchases must be in-person and in cash. No phone or internet sales.

Shipwrecked and alone, Viola disguises herself as a boy and enters into Duke Orsino's service. Lovesick Orsino sends her to court the Lady Olivia, but Olivia is much more interested in this cute young newcomer... When, unbeknownst to her, Viola's identical twin Sebastian also washes ashore, a merry brand of chaos ensues.

One of Shakespeare's most delightful plays, Twelfth Night is a classic tale of reckless revenge, mistaken identity, and mismatched lovers. All audiences will enjoy the National Players' fresh take on this spirited story.

No one is safe as a reign of terror rips through 1692 Salem. Led by Abigail Williams, a group of girls who claim to have seen the Devil hurl out charges of witchcraft, sending those who won't confess to the noose. When the accusing finger points to his wife, John Proctor is forced to confront his past and determine his future.

Arthur Miller's searing drama, inspired by the McCarthy era, comes to vivid new life in the National Players' bare-knuckle staging. A piercing look at what can happen when truth is bent to political convenience, The Crucible is a powerful story for our time.
